Getting Back Into Football: Making the Most of the New Season

The new school year is here, and for many young footballers, that means getting back into their football routine too.

After a break over the summer, getting back to regular training and matches can take a little time. But it can also be a great opportunity to set some new goals and think about what you want to improve this season.

Start With the Basics

After time away from football, there's no need to expect everything to feel perfect straight away.

Your first touch might feel a little off. You might not have the same fitness levels you had before the break, or you might need a few sessions to get your confidence back.

That's completely normal.

Start by getting comfortable with the ball again and gradually build your sharpness and fitness as the season progresses.

Set Yourself a Goal

A new season is a great time to choose something you want to work on.

It doesn't need to be a huge target.

You could focus on:

  • Improving your weaker foot

  • Becoming more confident on the ball

  • Improving your passing

  • Scoring more goals

  • Getting better at 1v1s

  • Making quicker decisions

  • Improving your fitness

Having something specific to work towards can help give your training more purpose.

Don't Forget the Fun

Football is about development and competition, but it should also be enjoyable.

Whether you're training with your team, playing matches with friends or practising your skills on your own, enjoying the game is a huge part of becoming a better player.

Don't put too much pressure on yourself to improve everything at once.

Enjoy playing, keep learning and give yourself time.

Work on the Small Things

You don't need to spend hours training to make a difference.

Small amounts of practice can add up over time.

Spend ten minutes working on your weaker foot. Practise your first touch. Get some touches on the ball in the garden or at the park.

The important thing is consistency.

A few minutes of purposeful practice can be more useful than simply going through the motions.

Learn From Your Matches

Matches aren't just about the result.

They're also an opportunity to learn.

After a game, think about what went well and what you could have done differently.

Maybe you found it difficult to receive the ball under pressure. Perhaps you could have made better runs or communicated more with your teammates.

Don't see mistakes as failures.

Use them to work out what you can improve next.

A New Season, A Fresh Opportunity

Every season gives players another chance to develop.

You don't need to become a completely different footballer overnight. Focus on making small improvements, staying consistent and enjoying your football.

As the new school year gets underway, we're looking forward to another season of football at AFC Whyteleafe.

Train hard, support your teammates, learn from your experiences and, most importantly, enjoy the game.
