Football in the Heat: Staying Safe This Summer
With temperatures rising across the UK and many young players continuing to train, play in tournaments and enjoy football throughout the summer, it's important to remember that hot weather can bring additional challenges.
At AFC Whyteleafe Youth, player welfare is always our top priority. Whilst football is a fantastic way to stay active during the summer months, taking sensible precautions can help everyone enjoy the game safely.
Stay Hydrated
One of the most important things players can do before, during and after football is stay hydrated. Young players can lose a significant amount of fluid when exercising in warm conditions, so bringing plenty of water to every session is essential.
Coaches will continue to provide regular water breaks during training sessions and matches, but players should also ensure they are drinking water throughout the day, particularly before arriving at football.
Dress for the Conditions
Lightweight, breathable sports clothing can help players stay comfortable during hot weather. Sun cream should be applied before outdoor sessions, especially to exposed areas such as the face, neck, arms and legs.
Parents may also wish to provide a cap for players to wear before and after sessions when they are not actively taking part.
Listen to Your Body
Hot weather affects everyone differently. If a player feels unusually tired, dizzy, unwell or overheated, they should immediately let a coach, parent or responsible adult know.
There is no shame in taking a break when needed. Looking after your health is far more important than pushing through discomfort.
Enjoy Summer Football
Summer provides a great opportunity for young players to stay active, spend time with friends and continue developing their skills. Whether it's organised coaching, a kickabout in the garden or simply practising a few touches with a ball, football can be enjoyed in many different ways.
The most important thing is to have fun whilst staying safe.
Looking Ahead
As we approach the end of another fantastic season, we would like to thank all of our players, coaches, volunteers and families for their continued support. It has been a year full of development, teamwork and memorable moments, and we are excited to see what the future holds for AFC Whyteleafe Youth.
We hope everyone enjoys a safe, active and football-filled summer!
