5 Simple Football Skills Kids Can Practise at Home
Improving at football doesn't only happen during training sessions. Practising at home is one of the best ways for young players to build confidence and develop their technical ability.
Here are five simple football skills that children can practise at home with very little space or equipment.
1. Ball Juggling
Ball juggling is a great way to improve balance, coordination and touch on the ball.
Players can start by letting the ball bounce between touches and gradually work towards keeping the ball in the air. Even a few minutes of juggling each day can make a big difference.
Try to beat your own record and keep track of your highest score.
2. Inside–Outside Touches
This simple drill helps players develop close control and confidence when dribbling.
Using the inside and outside of the same foot, gently move the ball from side to side while staying in control. Players should try to keep the ball close and their head up.
This can be practised in a garden or even a small indoor space.
3. Wall Passing
A wall can be a great training partner.
Passing the ball against a wall helps players improve their passing accuracy and first touch. Try using both feet and focus on controlling the ball before playing the next pass.
This is one of the best ways to improve quickly.
4. Cone or Object Dribbling
If cones are not available, players can use everyday objects such as water bottles or shoes.
Set up a small dribbling course and practise moving the ball around the objects using small touches. This helps improve control and turning ability.
Players should try to use both feet where possible.
5. First Touch Practice
A good first touch is one of the most important skills in football.
Players can drop the ball and control it with their foot before it stops moving. The aim is to keep the ball close and under control.
Practising first touch regularly helps players feel more confident during matches.
Consistency Makes the Difference
Just 10–15 minutes of practice at home a few times per week can make a big difference to a young player’s development.
At AFC Whyteleafe Youth, we always encourage players to practise their skills regularly. The more time spent on the ball, the more confident players will become during training and matches.
