Preparing for Try-Outs and Trials: Confidence and Mindset Tips

At AFC Whyteleafe Youth, trials are a regular and exciting part of our club. We had record numbers at our U18 trials last year, and we run sessions across many age groups throughout the year. While it’s a great opportunity to showcase ability and join a welcoming, FA-accredited club with a clear pathway to senior football, we know trials can feel daunting for young players and their parents.

The key to performing well isn’t just technical skill on the day. Coaches notice attitude, effort, and how players handle pressure; these are qualities we actively develop every week at Whyteleafe. Here are some practical tips to help your child feel confident, prepared, and ready to enjoy the experience:

Focus on What You Can Control

Nerves often come from worrying about things outside their control (other players, coach decisions). Remind them to focus on effort, listening, and having fun!

At Whyteleafe we encourage players to bring high energy, communicate with teammates, and keep going especially after mistakes. This positive approach often makes players stand out.

Prepare Practically in the Days Leading Up

  • Get plenty of sleep, an early night before the trial makes a big difference to energy and focus.

  • Do short, familiar practice: 10-15 minutes of dribbling, passing against a wall, or simple shooting. Keep it light and enjoyable.

  • Pack kit the night before: clean boots, shin pads, water bottle, and a healthy snack.

  • Arrive a little early so they can settle in calmly.

Build Confidence with Positive Self-Talk

Help your child reframe nerves into excitement. Useful phrases include:

  • “I’ve trained hard, now I’ll show what I can do”

  • “It’s okay to make mistakes, that’s how I improve”

  • “I’m going to enjoy this and give everything”

This mindset training is a big part of our coaching at Whyteleafe and helps players in trials, matches, and beyond.

Warm Up Properly and Stay Focused

Encourage a good warm-up before the session starts (light jogging, dynamic movements, gentle ball work). During the trial, stay switched on, follow instructions quickly, and show good body language even when resting.

What Our Coaches Are Really Looking For

From running trials across all ages, our coaches look for:

  • High work rate and effort throughout

  • Positive attitude and teamwork

  • Willingness to listen and respond to feedback

  • Basic technical ability and game understanding (they don’t expect perfection at youth level)

Players who show these qualities fit perfectly into our development-focused environment and often progress quickly through our teams.

After the Trial – Win or Learn

Whatever the outcome, treat it as a valuable experience. Talk about what went well and one thing to work on next time. Many of our current players joined after trials and have grown enormously in skill and confidence within our supportive pathway.

Why Families Choose AFC Whyteleafe Youth

We are a 2* FA Accredited club with over thirty teams, academy-style coaching, a clear pathway to Isthmian League senior football, and a strong emphasis on enjoyment and long-term development. Our technical sessions, Saturday Soccer School, and 1-to-1 coaching are excellent ways to prepare for trials and keep improving.

Final Thought

Trials are just one step in a much bigger football journey. The most important outcome is that your child enjoys the experience, learns from it, and feels proud of their effort.

If you want your child to feel more confident and better prepared, our programmes are designed exactly for that.
