Building Technical Excellence from the Ground Up
This week at AFC Whyteleafe, our players are working on the core technical skills that influence every moment on the pitch. From sharp passing combinations to dribbling in tight areas, each activity is designed to build confidence while improving consistency.
We are incorporating a variety of drills that challenge players to operate in tight spaces, encouraging quick footwork and intelligent movement off the ball. By asking players to scan early, recognise available options, and react at speed, we help them build the foundations for better decision-making and improved game awareness.
First-touch quality is another major focus. Players will work on receiving the ball under pressure, using different surfaces of the foot, and positioning their body correctly to open up forward options. These small but critical details allow young players to move more confidently and maintain possession even when challenged.
As the sessions continue, players are encouraged to take ownership of their development by applying these technical skills in conditioned games and small-sided scenarios. This helps them connect what they learn in training to the situations they face during competitive play.
